History of Flight

More than 60 premier paintings by many of the world’s top artists are on display in the History of Flight Art Gallery located on the second floor of the Eagle Building. Dedicated in honor of Major General Richard F. Gillis, the 16th commander of the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, the Gallery contains an original World War II sculptor’s mold by Frank Vitton, Mrs. Gillis’ grandfather.

  • The art covers the history of aviation from World War I to the present, with an emphasis on World War II.
  • Famous and local personalities, including congressmen, senators and local WWII flying ace Brig. General Robert L. Scott, author of God is My Co-Pilot, are portrayed along with paintings of Robins Field, presently Robins Air Force Base.
  • The Gallery also contains a replica of a 1898 hang glider.
  • Other artwork is distributed throughout the museum and in special exhibits.
  • Art displays mentioned are periodically changed out with displays of various aviation artists.
