The Park was christened “Freedom Park” in remembrance of the more than a million men and women who have purchased freedom with
their lives since the creation of our great nation, and as a reminder of the more than 42 million who have served in time of war or conflict.

Each of the five pavilions bears the name of various wars and conflicts including World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, the Cold War, and Desert Storm & Beyond. The World War II Pavilion remembers the First World War, the “war to end all wars.” The Korean War Pavilion honors the free nations of the world that banded together to produce a navy, army and air force to go the defense of a small country that had been invaded by an aggressively minded neighbor. The Vietnam War Pavilion is dedicated to a complex and multifaceted episode usually divided into two parts: the first, the French attempt to maintain their colonial hold on Indochina from 1945 to 1954; the second, the subsequent conflict between the politically divided sections, commonly known as North and South Vietnam. The Cold War Pavilion reminds us of a time when there were no battles and no defeated forces; there are survivors, not victors, and peace has never been secure. And lastly, the Desert Storm and Beyond Pavilion is dedicated to the Persian Gulf War of the early 90s and the ongoing war against terrorism we are still fighting today.
